Laila, a flirtatious girl from a reputable family, meets Qais, a rich boy, and initially tells him to leave her alone. However, they keep running into each other, and Qais believes it’s destiny. Despite their families’ feud, they fall in love. When Laila’s family discovers their relationship, they arrange her marriage to Ibban. Laila breaks up with Qais after a misunderstanding, thinking he disrespected her father. Qais, hurt, tells Laila to find him if she needs him, and they part ways.
Four years after their breakup, Qais returns for his father’s funeral and avoids Laila. However, Laila, who’s suffering abuse from her husband, seeks Qais out and finds him struggling with his mental health. She decides to leave her husband and asks Qais to wait until her divorce is finalized. Before the divorce, her husband dies in an accident. Laila plans to run away with Qais, but her father intervenes, promising to let her marry Qais soon. Laila asks Qais to wait again, delaying their reunion once more.
Qais, still waiting for Laila, becomes eccentric and hallucinates her presence. He runs away to a mountain, where he imagines Laila is with him and starts a new life. After a search, he’s found and brought back home, where he sees Laila but claims she’s not just one person, pointing to multiple directions, indicating his complete mental breakdown and obsession with her.
Laila realizes Qais’ love has reached its peak and declares their souls must meet to be together. Holding the note he gave her, she dies, starting her journey to reunite with him. Qais, now called Majnu, learns of her death and runs to the mountains, where he falls and dies on her grave. As he takes his last breath, he sees Laila calling to him, and their souls finally reunite. The film ends with a song, showing they’re free to fulfill their plans together, concluding with the ironic yet true line, “They lived happily ever after.”
